The First Best Thing tells the true story of a young girl who moves to a new town. She is bullied and harassed, becomes overwhelmed by loneliness, and sinks into a deep depression. Without realizing it, she becomes consumed by anger, hatred, and pain. Then one day she experiences a flash of joy, an emotion so sudden and unexpected and shocking that she doesn't immediately recognize it. From that point on, she decides to change the way she perceives herself and her world. And she succeeds.
Erin Rothman lives and works in Seattle, Washington. She wrote and illustrated The First Best Thing to prove that—more often than not—you can change the way you are perceived by changing how you view the world. It’s not easy, but, arguably, nothing worth getting really is. Especially when you start young and seem to have everything against you. Her words and art can influence even the angriest, saddest, or proudest person.
